Types of Outerwear

!: Types of Outerwear

Some will say that fashion has gone from bad to worse or from good to better over the past generations, however there are some articles of clothing that never seem to change and that is outerwear. Sure designers have put their mark on them, but the overall style has basically stayed the same. Recently, they have become a part of an outfit and not just an accessory or requirement. It isn't unusual for individuals to own more than few different styles to match different ensembles in their wardrobe.

Initially they were meant to protect people from the elements, whether it is wind, rain or temperature; it was the deciding factor of what was going to be worn that day. There are many types of outer garments for people of all shapes and sizes. They can come in anything from silk to leather and of course a similar range of prices.

While most consider a coat as a heavier garment for cold weather and jackets for mild weather in recent times the names coat and jacket seem to go hand in hand. Now to differentiate between the two the term winter coat or light jacket is used. The standard winter coat can range from waist length to long and classy. They can also differ by the amount of warmth they can provide. They are customarily made simply to keep you warm, but can also be a fashion statement.

Windbreakers are exactly as the name says; they are used to block the wind from your body. They are considered jackets by most, come in a variety of weights and can be used for mild weather.

Rain coats or jackets are basically the same; their purpose is to keep you and your clothing dry. They can also come in long or waist length. Rain coats are normally made from waterproof vinyl or a rubber type material. Rain coats come in every color of the rainbow, some popular children's rain coats, even have cartoon characters imprinted on them. Windbreakers can also be used as rain coats as many of them are waterproof.

Ponchos and shawls; ponchos go around your neck and do not have any sleeves. Imagine a bed sheet with a hole in the middle. Clint Eastwood made them famous in his movies; the Good Bad and the Ugly and Fist Full of Dollars. They vary in fabric choices and can even come in a vinyl waterproof version for rain. Shawls are somewhat similar to ponchos because they drape over your shoulders; however shawls wrap around your shoulders not your neck. Shawls, also called wraps or stoles are a quick and easy way to cover your shoulders without wearing a jacket.

Finally we come to the cloak, similar to a cape; the cloak is used to protect your clothing. The classic cloak is now more commonly worn in theatrical productions. Dracula and the medieval era made the cloak a very desirable garment. Another style of cloak that is becoming popular is u handmade in Peru, of alpaca or wool. It has even made its way to the runways of Europe; a classic choice for any wardrobe.
