What to Wear to Machu Picchu

!: What to Wear to Machu Picchu

Travelista Eva couldn't wait for her recent visit to Machu Picchu, the 15th century Inca site located almost 8,000 feet (more than 1 mile!) above sea level. Once she and her crew set foot on the romantically cobble-stoned roads of nearby Cusco, they knew it would be an experience they would never forget.

"I wanted to be outside, embracing the culture," says Eva. "The people [of the village] went about their day as we explored the town. You don't often see that in a lot of Latin American countries...most have lost that authentic, old world culture. "

Here are Eva's tips for a comfortable Machu Picchu wardrobe...with a little more flair.

What to Wear to Machu Picchu

Simple yoga pants, a tank, and a wind and sand-resistant shemagh. This desert scarf is multi-purpose and acts as a bonus accessory: It covers your shoulders and neck from the sun, wind and sand while dressing up your outfit. REI has a version from Buff Original Buff in a ton of prints and color to suit any style.

A strong, waterproof hiking shoe. It's important to have ankle support as you climb rocky-like steps to reach the pinnacle. And watch out for the mud! Sturdy shoes that will keep your feet dry and dirt free is a key to helping you stay safe and comfy. How cute are these from REI?

A staple that any outdoor activity requires is the good ol' bandana. Wipe away sweat, cover your neck from the sun, pull your hair back...or just add as a simple arm/wrist/neck accessory.

Hats aren't just for providing mobile shade for your face...it's an obvious solution to a bad hair day (you will be taking pics, after all!). Try something a little more unique than a baseball cap to add a little panache. REI has a great array of hats, too, depending on your style.

The altitude is a lot higher in Machu Picchu, so expect occasional showers. "It may rain for 20 minutes or less," explains Eva, "so it's important to bring a simple rain poncho. It's easier to store and wear [than a regular rain jacket]."

Other Tips from Eva

Alpaca wool: "You can find alpaca-made stuff really cheap," Eva advises. But make sure you save some dough and do your local shopping in nearby Cusco instead of the more expensive area around Machu Picchu. What sartorial treasures will you find? Peruvian jackets, beanies, leg warmers - even massages and food cost less..925 silver is really inexpensive ( - ), of good quality - and price-negotiable. Try your hand at bargaining and see what deals you can score!

Old-school nightlife - Lima-style: As you sip away at your Pisco sour (the traditional mixed drink of Peru), you can look just right with your new alpaca jacket and your favorite jeans at any one of the streets lined with casual bars. But for those of you who want to get a little more dolled up, Lima also has a number of fancier venues. Oh, and happy hours (read: happy our prices) stretch way longer into the night than you're probably used to back home.

Fight the height: It might sound a little suspicious, but believe me; I wouldn't post it here if it were! Coco leaves steeped in very hot water, like tea, will help with altitude sickness and can be found everywhere.

Stylish items for hiking as described here can be found at REI.

Types of Outerwear

!: Types of Outerwear

Some will say that fashion has gone from bad to worse or from good to better over the past generations, however there are some articles of clothing that never seem to change and that is outerwear. Sure designers have put their mark on them, but the overall style has basically stayed the same. Recently, they have become a part of an outfit and not just an accessory or requirement. It isn't unusual for individuals to own more than few different styles to match different ensembles in their wardrobe.

Initially they were meant to protect people from the elements, whether it is wind, rain or temperature; it was the deciding factor of what was going to be worn that day. There are many types of outer garments for people of all shapes and sizes. They can come in anything from silk to leather and of course a similar range of prices.

While most consider a coat as a heavier garment for cold weather and jackets for mild weather in recent times the names coat and jacket seem to go hand in hand. Now to differentiate between the two the term winter coat or light jacket is used. The standard winter coat can range from waist length to long and classy. They can also differ by the amount of warmth they can provide. They are customarily made simply to keep you warm, but can also be a fashion statement.

Windbreakers are exactly as the name says; they are used to block the wind from your body. They are considered jackets by most, come in a variety of weights and can be used for mild weather.

Rain coats or jackets are basically the same; their purpose is to keep you and your clothing dry. They can also come in long or waist length. Rain coats are normally made from waterproof vinyl or a rubber type material. Rain coats come in every color of the rainbow, some popular children's rain coats, even have cartoon characters imprinted on them. Windbreakers can also be used as rain coats as many of them are waterproof.

Ponchos and shawls; ponchos go around your neck and do not have any sleeves. Imagine a bed sheet with a hole in the middle. Clint Eastwood made them famous in his movies; the Good Bad and the Ugly and Fist Full of Dollars. They vary in fabric choices and can even come in a vinyl waterproof version for rain. Shawls are somewhat similar to ponchos because they drape over your shoulders; however shawls wrap around your shoulders not your neck. Shawls, also called wraps or stoles are a quick and easy way to cover your shoulders without wearing a jacket.

Finally we come to the cloak, similar to a cape; the cloak is used to protect your clothing. The classic cloak is now more commonly worn in theatrical productions. Dracula and the medieval era made the cloak a very desirable garment. Another style of cloak that is becoming popular is u handmade in Peru, of alpaca or wool. It has even made its way to the runways of Europe; a classic choice for any wardrobe.

Alpaca Fiber and Its Uniqueness

!: Alpaca Fiber and Its Uniqueness

Alpacas are the premier domestic animals that inhabit the country of Peru. The Moche people who occupy the Peruvian countryside have for several years domesticated the alpaca and these animals are usually to be found grazing in the southern part of the Peruvian landscape, about 3500 to 5000 meters above the sea level. Nowadays the alpaca is widely preserved in the country of Peru and one of the key reasons behind this is the fiber which is obtained form the alpacas. It is known that the alpaca fiber is available in Peru in as many as 52 natural colors and it is of enormous value in the textile industry. One of the major characteristics of the alpaca fiber is its hypoalllergic quality and in terms of texture it is extremely smooth and silky, light in weight and warm as well. It was in Peru that the Amerindians used the alpaca fiber in creating different kinds of garments initially and it is only in recent times that it has emerged as a profitable commercial product and various items made from this alpaca fiber like ponchos, sweaters, gloves, blankets and socks are sold in the world market.

Alpacas are usually white in color though there are various other colored alpacas also available like in browns and fawn colors. It is this white colored alpaca fiber which is primarily in demand especially in South America. In terms of quality the alpaca fiber is quite sleek and lustrous and its fineness is of considerable help to the spinners who find it easy to create a yarn and weave or knit through it. In case of obtaining the fleece form the alpacas it is necessary to remember that the whole amount of fleece obtained is not necessarily of excellent quality and therefore the 'guard hair' possessed by the alpacas are to be removed before any form of spinning.

Alpacas are mainly of two kinds and therefore the quality of fiber extracted from them is also different. The Suri alpaca is very well preserved for the softness and silky nature of its fleece and it comprises about 20% of the total alpaca population. On the other hand, the fiber produced by the Huacaya alpaca is quite dense and soft. The alpaca fiber may become thicker in case the animal is exposed to over nutrition. Warm clothing made form alpacas fibers are in high demand among outdoor sport buffs and its light weight and warmth are perfect for this purpose.
